Chapter 776
"Heh, heh-heh."
Naylor let out a low chuckle, "Blood is thicker than water, isn't it? She hasn't been a mother to you for a single day, yet here you are, defending her like a knight."
His eyes narrowed, "Want to take care of her? Just come back. You can see her every day, treat her well as you wish. Otherwise..."
His tone darkened, "You can't take her away from here."
He tilted his chin up, gesturing towards the rows of suited bodyguards standing by, "Thinking about a showdown? You'll have to get past them first, won't you?"
Father and son stood at an impasse until footsteps from upstairs signaled Sherilyn's approach.
She paused at the top of the stairs, noticing the sudden silence between father and son, then nodded towards the upper floor.
"Mrs. Katy's already asleep."
"Thank you," Naylor said, nodding gratefully.
Gilbert abruptly stood, marching over to grab Sherilyn's hand, "No need to waste words here. Let's go!"
Sherilyn stumbled a bit as he pulled her along, but she didn't forget to ask, "What about Rebecca White?"
"She's already in the car."
"Oh."
Sure enough, Rebecca White was sitting in the car, having waited for them. She grabbed Sherilyn's hand as soon as she saw her. "Sherilyn, you made it out! Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Sherilyn patted her hand, reassuring her.
"That's good to hear..."
After leaving Blue Haven, Gilbert dropped Rebecca White off at the Southern District Sanatorium.
When Sherilyn emerged, he was waiting by the door.
"Where to? I can give you a ride."
"No need..." Sherilyn shook her head, "I can manage on my own."
Psh. Gilbert let out a barely audible scoff, "What, afraid I'll cling to you? Relax, I don't mean it that way."
He added, "You just did me a favor. Consider it a thank you from me. I don't like owing people."
"Well... okay then." Sherilyn hesitated before getting into the car.
She didn't take the passenger seat but opted for the backseat instead.
As the car started moving, Gilbert glanced at her through the rearview mirror, You and her... do you know
each other?" Referring to his mother.
"Not really."
UMS
Sherilyn shook her head, "Ran into her at the hospital a few days back. She was being chased by a group, took a fall, and I helped her up."
"I see..."
Gilbert nodded, appreciating the simple act of kindness towards his mother.
"Thank you."
"It's nothing." Sherilyn offered a faint smile, "I didn't do much."
"Didn't do much, huh?"
Gilbert's gaze darkened as he gripped the steering wheel tighter "You have no idea. Around Naylor,
even getting a decent meal or a good night's sleep is a luxury"
Really?
Sherilyn was taken aback, looking up at him.
His mother struggled for basic comforts, but what about him?
Did he flee from the Harrison family to the Johnson family because of similar hardships?
Suddenly, their eyes met in the rearview mirror.
Hastily, Sherilyn looked away.
Gilbert's lips twisted into a bitter
smile as he tightened his grip on the
steering wheel, "Enough about me.

boyfriend treating you well?"
"...Yeah."
After a brief pause, Sherilyn nodded.
A pang of sourness hit Gilbert, but he masked it with insincerity, "That's good."
As the car pulled into Sunset Ridge Community and stopped in front of her apartment building, Sherilyn got out, and Gilbert followed.
"Sherilyn!"
"Yes?" She paused.
"Just in case, I mean..."
Gilbert started, his voice filled with an aching bitterness, "If he ever treats you wrong, I... I'm still here waiting for you."
