Humble and loving
Mr. Stevens sat in his office waiting to hear news about the day’s operation. He had managed to stop Mr. Crack from talking to Melissa for the time being. But he still feared what extent Diana would go to to keep the secret hidden.
“Was all the cargo delivered?” He inquired from Diana when she got to the office.
“Yes daddy. They delivered everything on time.” Diana confirmed pouring herself a drink.
“Our little rat, did you catch it?” He asked sitting back, placing his work aside. He had set the whole thing up to see what Melissa would do.
“No, no one showed up. After clearing the goods, I let two of my trusted men stand watch for any vehicles driving in but nothing. I guess she didn’t bite the bait.” Though their informant with the police had nothing to report, Diana hoped she would get a reason to attack Melissa.
Luckily the taxi Melissa took drove off seconds before Diana’s men got to the location. Missing her by a whisker.
“Then we don’t need to pursue her if she is not a threat to us.” Mr. Stevens said hopping Diana would stop her obsession with Melissa.
“Oh daddy, you’re growing soft as you grow old. We can’t afford to let our guards down while she is still married to Mark Johnson.” Diana was never going to let Melissa have a happy life. She won’t let her enjoy everything she doesn’t have. “I already got instructions on the next shipment. I will have the information on your desk by morning.” She said changing the subject.
They used the licensed transport company to move illegal drugs for their client.
“Good, let’s head home. Your mother is preparing a special meal for us today.” Mr. Steven said taking his coat.
“Sorry daddy I can’t, I have other businesses to attend to. Take Jess. I’m sure she is dying to have decent meals prepared by mommy.” Diana mocked Jessica when she walked in.
“What’s your problem?” Jessica grayed at Diana who kissed her father on the cheek before leaving the office ignoring her.
“Don’t mind your sister. Let’s go, we don’t want to keep your mother waiting.” He said taking his briefcase.
The two girls never got along well, always competing with each other over every little thing. He had sent Jessica to a boarding school at an early age to stop the fights between them but they still did not see eye to eye.
Though his wife was not happy about how he raised Diana, she always supported him and obeyed everything he asked of her. Seeing how different his daughters were, Mr. Stevens deep down wished Diana was more like Jessica. Humble and loving.
“Dad, how long are you going to let Diana keep operating that club in the casino?” Jessica asked as she joined him in the car.
“Try to understand your sister, she is not a monster as you think.” Mr. Stevens pleaded.NôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
“Dad, what she does is not right. Only you don’t see it.” She shrugged, then turned her gaze outside the window as they drove off.
….
The taxi dropped Melissa at the back of the building. With her bodyguards still parked in the street watching the apartment, she couldn’t risk walking through the front door.
Taking the stairs, she scanned the area for guards as she crept toward the room. As soon as she knocked, Lisa opened the door pulling her inside.
“Goodness Melissa, what took you so long? Where have you been? I was about to ask your bodyguards to search for you.” Lisa exclaimed looking at her from head to toe.
“It’s a long story. I need to shower and get out of these clothes first.” She said walking to the bathroom.
Taking off her dusty clothes Melissa felt pain all over. Her palm had finally stopped bleeding but her elbow and knees still ached. She was so afraid all the while that she didn’t notice how hard she hit herself when she fell.
Standing under the warm water she still remembered feeling the bullets flying around her. Closing her eyes she could still see Diana walking out of that container. Seeing her command the armed men scared her a little.
“Melissa, are you okay?” Startled by the knock, Melissa opened her eyes.
“I’m fine, are you done unpacking everything?” Melissa asked walking into the kitchen to get a bottle of water after dressing up while Lisa unwrapped a box full of utensils.
The boxes were scattered all over.
Lisa had been restless when Melissa didn’t get back after thirty minutes. She just paced around the house with the phone in her hand wondering where Melissa had gone. She had to keep smiling at the men helping bring in the boxes pretending Melissa was still in the other room.
“Only a few boxes left in the kitchen, let’s sit. I want to know what is going on with you as I treat those bruises.” Lisa said getting the first aid kit from the kitchen top cabinet.
Listening to Melissa narrate what she had experienced in the last two hours scared her. If those men had by any chance seen her then she would be blamed for not informing her bodyguards when she had left earlier.
“So your father’s partner led the company to bankruptcy and this lady is his daughter?” Lisa asked after watching the video and listening to her.
“It seems so. My godfather is involved in drug trafficking.” She confirmed.
“Why don’t you report this to the police? They are better equipped to investigate than you are?” Lisa asked.
“I can’t file a case without evidence strong enough for the police to work with.” Melissa responded taking some pain relieving medicine.
“Isn’t this enough? You can show this to the police. I’m sure with the video they will issue an arrest warrant and lock them away.” Lisa insisted on holding Melissa’s phone.
“Sadly this can’t work. I didn’t capture her face when I dropped my phone. Besides, they cleared everything after the transaction and this has no relation with my father’s company. I need to dig deeper. Find evidence to show how they led the company to bankruptcy.” She said helping unpack after Lisa dressed the wound on her palm and applied medicine on other bruises on her body.
“What does mark say about your investigation, is he okay with it?” Lisa inquired worried for her friend.
“He asked me to let him handle it. But I can’t sit and do nothing.” She sighed, taking a sip of water. Enough about my problems. Tell me about you. What got you from the province?” Melissa questioned changing the subject.
Though Lisa was not comfortable talking about her ex-fiance, she opened up to Melissa.
The man was still calling, gloving trying to win her back despite having a family.
