Back
Maya.
Two weeks had passed and it was finally time for me to return to the company. The next day was the D-day. Much as I was excited, I was very nervous about the prospect of seeing Zane Carrington and Harry. With everything that had happened, I was pretty sure it was going to be an awkward reunion.
I craved to be useful, experience headache and mental strain at the end of the day. To have something to look forward to each passing day and to feel important once again. These two weeks had made me realize that I couldn’t live without my career. I had nearly gone mad counting days as they passed by.
“Ew! Get your dirty socks off my table,” I told my sister Kelli. How can a sane person think it’s okay to put socks from her feet on the table? “This isn’t your house where you can throw stuff everywhere.”
Kelli’s whole apartment was one big, disgusting mess. All the rooms always had stuff everywhere and one can barely see the floor. Occasionally, she would get someone to clean up but after a few hours, the apartment would go back to its default state and look like a garbage dumping site.
“Are you kicking me out now?” She asked, faking hurt.
Rolling my eyes, I picked up the remote and changed from the Mexican telenovela channel to a local one as a program I wanted was about to start. “I’m not kicking you out. I think you should grow up and stop doing things that disgust others.”
“Why do you always think you’re perfect?” She queried and I took a deep breath before answering.
“I don’t think-”
“Save it,” she yelled, in a growling sort of way. She stuffed the socks in her small backpack and stood up. “I’m leaving anyway. A sister is supposed to provide comfort to another but it seems you know nothing about being a sister.”
She slammed the door so hard I thought it would fall off.
“I have my own problems too, you know.” I yelled, not sure if she’d hear me. That’s the problem with being the elder sister. Your younger sisters think you have to be everything for them, and always be at their beck and call. Some don’t understand that sometimes life becomes so hard for you and you may not have time to sort out their problems.
The program on TV was called Salon Times. A bunch of people having their hair done were having a televised discussion on whether one should remain friends with their exes or not. Thirty minutes into the show, I gave up due to my limited concentration. I couldn’t stop thinking about Zane and Harry. What the hell was I going to do with them? Turning off the television and then lights, I headed to my bedroom to get ready for the next day.
The next morning, I was summoned to the COO’s office. Leaving my things in the office which Kim had already vacated, I went to Harlow’s office. I froze when I saw Zane. I didn’t expect to see him there.
“Good morning,” I glanced at both executives alternatively.
“Good morning, Miss Bennett.” Harlow said.
“Welcome back,” Zane said, staring a little bit too intensely at me. What was going on in his mind?
“Thank you,” I smiled at him, almost genuinely. “I’m glad to be back again.”
“Today, I give my final warning to you,” Mr. Harlow said with a strict expression. “I don’t expect that kind of behavior again. There is no room for disrespect in this company.” He shook his head. “Miss Bennett, when you started working here everyone treated you well. I want you to treat Miss Dalton with the same respect. Be nice to her as she’s had a rough life.”This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
“Mr. Harlow. I try to do that but you don’t know what kind of person Miss Dalton is,” I insisted. I was not going down like a defeated puppy. “I don’t trust her and I suggest you shouldn’t either.”
“See? This is exactly the kind of behavior I don’t want. Pointing fingers at others. We can’t start disliking her just because you do.”
Why wasn’t Zane defending me? Did he like Kim? Or was he really going against me because he saw Harry and I kissing? He was too intelligent to have missed the fact that Kim was unbearable.
“That’s not what I’m saying.”
“Then what are you saying? Mr. Smith, a friend of yours and Miss Dalton started getting along quite well when you left. I wonder if you had been poisoning his mind against her.”
My heart was pounding fast with anger because that was so shocking. I didn’t understand how Harry and Kim started getting along. He used to despise her. I knew Harlow would not make up something like that.
“I swear I did no such thing but I understand where you’re coming from,” I told the COO. “I’ll try to work well with her.”
“You can both get back to work.”
Zane didn’t say anything, he just watched as I walked out. It was very unnerving.
When I reached my office, I found Harry at the door.
“I need to tell you something,” he said.
I stared at him for a few seconds, wondering who the person before me was. I didn’t know he’d befriend Kim just because I refused to pick his calls.
“I heard that you’re friends with Kim now. You must be so close considering the fact that even Mr. Harlow knows. Why would you think you have to explain anything to me? You’re an adult free to do whatever you wish. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a lot of work to do in my office. I’m pretty sure your darling Kim has messed everything up just to annoy me.”
I walked in and locked the door before he could say another word. I was back and this time, I didn’t want to get involved in any drama.
