Chapter 54
Chapter 54 A Hairpin
Emily obediently let him pull her along, her face slightly flushed. "I look terrible, don't I?"
"No, you're not ugly at all." Mr. Satan pulled her to sit down, gently encircling her. "Emily, it's my fault. I didn't consider it properly. I shouldn't have let you face that man alone."
Emily felt a bit teary-eyed, not sure why she always became so fragile in front of him.
Just moments ago, she had been strong in Jackson's car, but once back at 2307, feeling his embrace, she couldn't help but want to cry.
"You're afraid, aren't you?" Mr. Satan gently stroked her long hair.
"Yeah," Emily nodded. "A little."
"Don't be afraid, I'm here, okay?"
Emily bit her lip and nestled into his embrace. "I don't know why Nathan suddenly went crazy today. When I called him, I could still hear him arguing with Sophia. And then today he tried to force himself on me... I just don't understand. Didn't he love Sophia? How could he change so quickly?"
Mr. Satan's voice was as melancholic as ever. "Men like Nathan, perhaps they may like a woman, but they only truly love themselves."
Emily strongly agreed with this statement. "He's been spoiled since childhood, and he's especially selfish. Sophia is foolish too, marrying into the Reed family is like becoming a maid. Nathan's mother doesn't even respect women. If she has a daughter, her future won't be any better."NôvelDrama.Org owns this.
"Whatever she does? Emily, she no longer sees you as a sister, and you don't need to treat her like a sister either. Sophia is an adult, she chose this path herself, so she has to bear the consequences."
Emily understood this reasoning, but she felt a bit sad about it.
Sophia probably didn't expect Nathan to change his heart so quickly.
"I just hope to divorce Nathan as soon as possible now. I don't want anything else."
Mr. Satan fell silent for a moment. "If he doesn't agree to divorce voluntarily, then let's take legal action. I didn't want to do this originally, but what Nathan did today has crossed my bottom line. I can't let him live comfortably anymore."
But Emily said, "Can't we just not confront him?"
Mr. Satan wasn't too pleased. "You don't want revenge?"
"I don't want it anymore."
"... You can't bear to?"
"Of course not," Emily quickly denied. "Right now, I just want to live well, work hard, and earn money to treat my father's illness. I don't want to know whether Nathan and Sophia stay together or break up. I just want to draw a clear boundary with them." Mr. Satan sighed softly. "Emily, how about we live in Europe in the future?"
"Huh? Isn't New York good? I still have to take care of my father..."
"The medical conditions in Europe are also very good, we can bring your father over to take care of him together."
Emily hesitated for a moment, thinking of something. "Is it because there are people in America you don't want to see, or things you don't want to face?"
"Both," Satan said. "I can only say that this is the source of all my actions. I want to take you away and live happily."
That sentence was like a thorn, piercing Emily's heart, it hurt even if she pretended it didn't.
The source of actions... it should still be related to the woman he once loved, right?
Was he afraid to see her embracing her husband? Or perhaps he didn't want to see her with a child in her arms?
Even someone as powerful as Mr. Satan would have things he couldn't have.
"Let me think about it again, okay?"
"Okay."
Maybe because she had almost been violated by Nathan during the day, Mr. Satan didn't touch her tonight, just holding her waist and falling into a deep sleep.
The two of them were like tightly clasped spoons, feeling each other's heartbeat and warmth.
Before leaving in the morning, Mr. Satan kissed her forehead, something they did every morning when they parted.
Truly loving each other, even a kiss on the forehead was more profound than deep affection.
She washed Mr. Satan's clothes and hung them out to dry. In the sunlight, she noticed something black and circular in his white shirt. It vaguely looked like... a woman's hairpin?! Emily forced herself to believe it couldn't be. She knew how Mr. Satan treated her; he wasn't like Nathan...
But when she took out the item from the shirt, all her mental reassurance was futile.
It really was a woman's hairpin.
However, the style of this hairpin seemed rather old, like the kind that was popular over a decade ago. There was even a slightly worn-out bow on the black elastic band. It was evident that its owner was a thrifty person.
Perhaps... it belonged to a female elder in Satan's family?
Just then, the door was unlocked.
Mr. Satan rushed in somewhat frantically, first rummaging through the laundry basket, then checking the washing machine.
"Are you looking for this?" Emily spread the hairpin in her hand before him.
Pnet
Mr. Satan visibly relaxed, finally breathing a sigh of relief. He took the hairpin from her hand, disregarding its dampness from being soaked in water, and placed it directly inside the innermost part of his shirt, close to his heart.
It was exactly where she had found the hairpin on the shirt.
Emily had never seen Mr. Satan so distraught.
She felt a pang in her heart. "Is this hairpin so important to you?"
"It's more important than my life."
Emily lowered her head, chuckling self-deprecatingly, yet still holding onto a shred of hope. "Was it left by the woman you loved?" "Yes."
"How long have you been hiding it?"
"For ten years."
It felt like her heart was being pierced by tiny needles, yet Emily found she couldn't interrogate Mr. Satan the way she did with Nathan.
He had never intended to hide it from her in the first place.
He had mentioned more than once that he had loved a woman deeply, immensely.
She didn't even have the position to be upset now.
"Emily, it's not what you think. I will explain everything to you from the beginning..."
"Don't, I don't want to hear it," Emily shook her head. "Please don't tell me, okay? Your past with her, you remember it, and I won't force you to forget. I know you can't forget, but can you please not tell me?"
