“I have something to tell you,” said Rebecca as she stepped out of her bedroom with a towel wrapping her head. Nicholas looked up “Yes?”

She plopped down on the couch, sitting beside Nicholas. “I lied to you.”

Nicholas frowned. “I’m listening,” he said, looking at Rebecca intently.

“I was not attending any events earlier today, I went to the hospital instead,” she said, glancing at Nicholas, learning his reaction. She needed to make him believe that she trusted him. Even though she knew he must have learned that fact from Alicia and Theodore, hearing it from her would be something special that would trigger him to trust her more.

“What? Hospital? For what? Were you sick? Why didn’t you tell me, I could come with you,” said Nicholas, showing his worried face. Rebecca felt like smacking him right on his face because his acting was surreal.

“No, um, I met Doctor Theo and Alicia,” she stated firmly.

Nicholas glared. “Did you get something?” he asked, moving closer to her. Rebecca shrugged, “No, they deny it but I made Alicia angry, I told her I have something to do with Harvey behind her back and she was totally furious!” she said excitedly. Nicholas raised his eyebrow, “You enjoyed it, do you?”

“Is that even a question?” She leaned back, hiding her thumping heart.

Nicholas cleared his throat softly. “So, there was nothing happened between you and Harvey?”

Rebecca held herself from snorting. She put on an innocent face and shook her head, “Of course not! I would never do that! Me and Harvey, we’ve done. There is nothing left between us. I would never forgive him for letting Alicia ruin my life,” she lied and she knew Nicholas ate the bait.

“That’s my girl!” He caressed her hair gently. His face was so sincere that Rebecca almost thought he was not acting.

“Um, so what are you doing to do with Alicia and Doctor Theo? Are you going to give up on them? Or?”

Rebecca let out a long sigh. “I don’t think I would sacrifice my new life for that. I’m just gonna put that scar on the back of my head and move on” she lied again. Deep inside her heart, she wanted to pour her true feelings and let Nicholas know how furious she was but she decided to hold it for the better result, to put them down altogether.

Nicholas’s face softened, and he pulled her into a gentle hug. “That’s a wise decision, Becky. It’s time to focus on your future and leave the past behind”

Rebecca forced a smile, hugging him back. “My future? I don’t mind to call it our now,” she said casually.

Nicholas chuckled. “Our then.” He looked at her deeply as if he intended to kiss her but Rebecca pretended to cough violently, distracting his attention. “I’ll get you some water,” said Nicholas as he got up to grab a glass of water from the kitchen.

A man as good as Nicholas, why? Why did he have to get involved with Alicia? What made him so stupid?

“Here,” said Nicholas, holding out the glass of water to Rebecca who immediately smiled when she took it.

“Nic, can I ask you something?” Rebecca asked as she put the glass back on the table.

“Of course, ask anything,” answered Nicholas sitting cross–legged in front of her.

“Do you really love me?” Rebecca put on her best innocent face, trying to make Nicholas fall into her trap. Nicholas smiled, “More than love, I can’t even describe it.” Rebecca took both of Nicholas‘ hands and held them tightly. “We might really be together as you wish but sorry, I put conditions on that…”

Nicholas frowned angrily, showing his true nature. “What conditions?”

“I want you to do treatment, chemotherapy, or whatever. I don’t want you to leave me when we’ve only been together for a short time,” she said with teary eyes. She didn’t know how she managed to have such good acting.

Nicholas‘ face immediately changed from anger to surprise. “It’s not something that is difficult to grant but for me, there are a lot of considerations,” he answered wisely,

Rebecca felt a surge of hope. “Please, Nicholas, I don’t want to lose you,” she pleaded, squeezing his hands.

Nicholas sighed heavily. “Alright, Becky. I’ll think about it. For you.”

Rebecca smiled warmly, hiding her relief. “Thank you, Nic. It means a lot to me.”

And she did it. The question about chemo dropped his mood to the bottom and made Rebecca feel safe because he didn’t approach her at all.

As days passed, Rebecca maintained her charade, gradually collecting bits and pieces c information from Nicholas. She noted every suspicious conversation, every meeting h had with Alicia and Theodore. She kept Cathy updated, and they strategized their next moves carefully.

Rebecca decided to examine Nicholas‘ office one evening while he was not around. She had always been leery about doing this, knowing how careful and obsessive Nicholas could be, but she required more proof.

She found a locked drawer in his desk. After some searching, she located the key hidden under a stack of papers. Her heart pounded as she opened it, revealing a folder marked Confidential.” Inside were documents detailing financial transactions,

communications, and plans involving Alicia, Theodore, and some of the DEA dirty people.

Just as she was about to take photos of the documents, she heard the front door open. Panicking, she quickly put everything back in place and locked the drawer. She hurriedly returned to the living room, trying to appear casual.

“Hey, Nic,” she greeted him with a forced smile. “How was your day?”

Nicholas glanced at her, his eyes narrowing slightly. “It was fine. What about you?”

“Oh, you know, just the usual. Content making and photoshoot,” she lied smoothly, holding up a book she had grabbed from the coffee table.

Nicholas studied her for a moment before nodding. “Alright. I’m going to take a shower.”

Rebecca watched him walk away, her heart still racing. She had to be more careful. But she had what she needed. Now, it was time to move to the next phase of their plan.

The next day, she met Cathy at the cafe. She handed over the photos she had taken with her phone. “This should be enough to start with. We need to get these to authorities.” Cathy nodded, taking the photos. “I’ll handle it. You just focus on staying safe and keeping up the act.”
