Chapter 34 You Used to Like Him Before
"Gwen, you've gone too far." There was a hint of anger in Martin's tone.
"Aren't you the one who has gone too far instead?" His daughter drove over her with the car on purpose last night. If Edison hadn't shown up, she would probably be lying in the hospital now, or dead.
"You're already an adult now, why are you not sensible at all?" Martin complained angrily, regretting coming here.
Hearing the sound of him stomping downstairs, Gwenyth loosened her grip on the broom. She fell down on the sofa beside her, panting heavily, and beat her chest several times to calm herself down.
Since Martin knew that they were living here, he would probably come over again the second time. It's better for them to move.
After regaining her cool, she stood up, put the broom back in the kitchen, and took out the ingredients to cook from the fridge, starting to prepare for dinner. Soon night fell and she had finished cooking dinner.
She went into the room to pack her things. Since the summer clothes were thin, they didn't take up much space. She stuffed them into her backpack and didn't pack too much- just two sets of clothes and a pair of canvas shoes.
After finishing her chores, she put her bag on the sofa, sitting on it while waiting for Ursula and Susie's return.
When it was almost eight o'clock, she heard familiar footsteps from the stairs outside. Not long after, the clinking sound of the key resounded outside the door. She got up and opened the door.
Noticing Gwenyth was at home with a beautiful dress on, Ursula's eyes sparkled. "Is this dress... from your boyfriend?"
She hummed in affirmation and said, "Mom, dinner's ready."
"Thank you."
"Mom, I was almost hit by a car when I came back last night. Edison broke his hand in order to save me. I was taking care of him last night. He wanted me to stay with him for the time being. Since his hand was in a plaster cast, he can't do anything. And, he lives alone so no one is there to take care of him."
She didn't return home last night, yet guessing who she was with, Ursula didn't ask her.
"Mom, his plaster cast will be removed in about a month, and I'll be back by then."
Patting Gwenyth on her shoulder gently, Ursula said, "Just stay there if you want to. You're already a grown-up now, I believe you're mature enough to make your own decision. There's no need to ask my permission for everything."
Gwenyth was a little surprised as she thought Ursula would disagree.
"Gwen, you've sacrificed a lot for us. Thank you, my daughter. If Edison is serious about your relationship, then you should seize this chance tightly and don't let him go. But, if he's just playing around with you, then you must leave him as soon as possible."
"Got it."
"You used to like him before, didn't you?"
Gwenyth became embarrassed while listening to her words. "Nah, not at all."
"You're my daughter, how could I don't understand you?"
"Mom, stop making fun of me."
Lowering her head, Gwenyth picked up the backpack on the sofa, took out half the amount of the salary she received from the hotel, and give it to Ursula. "Mom, here you go."
"What about you? Do you still have money left to spend?"
"I still have some on me."
"Really?"
"Yes, don't worry about me."
"You have to keep some money on you, don't spend Edison's money on everything, that's not a good choice."
"Got it. By the way, the food is in the pot, remember to eat it." Before Gwenyth could continue saying anything to Ursula, the ponderous footsteps resounded from the stairs.
Hearing the stomping sound of the footsteps as if there were many people climbing toward the stairs, Gwenyth has an ominous feeling in her heart.
Don't tell me that the dunners' coming, she thought. Deep inside, she hoped that it wouldn't be those people, but the more she was afraid of something, the more it would come true.
The anti-theft door was soon knocked loudly. Susie shrank her shoulders and hid in Gwenyth's arms immediately. Without hesitation, Gwenyth led Susie into the bedroom and reminded her, "C'mon Susie, quickly hide up."
"Open the door, I know you're at home. If you don't open the door, we'll break up the door directly," spoke the one who was standing outside the door with a hoarse, terrifying voice. From NôvelDrama.Org.
It wasn't their first time breaking into the house.
Inside, Gwenyth was nervous as cold sweat trickled down from her forehead. She turned her head to look at the bedroom, confirming that Ursula had locked Susie inside, then only did she muster her courage to open the door.
A few tall, muscular men strode in one after another. Tensed by their existence, she stepped back anxiously.
"Yo! We've got the beauty here!"
Gwenyth took a step backward instinctively.
"Are you going to pay me back today?"
"I'm afraid I can't."
"Hah! You're always speaking the same word. You must pay me back all your debts, do you think we have nothing to do but run to this shitty place of yours?"
"I really don't have any money with me right now."
Before Seis got angry, Gwenyth continued speaking, "But soon, I'll be having money."
"When is it?"
"I just got a new job, and I can earn three million dollars in three months."
Seis narrowed his eyes as listening to her words. "You're dragging my time and plan to move away, right?"
"No."
"Do I look as gullible as a three-year-old?"
"It's been four years. Even if you're not tired of chasing us, we're tired of running. Give us a little more time. My job pays monthly, I can get a million dollars in a month."
Seis stared into her eyes, hesitating to believe her words or not.
"Still, three million dollars is not enough. You owe me five million dollars."
"But we've already paid back a lot before, and you guys keep moving out our family's stuff."
Noticing Gwenyth's serious expression, Seis found it somehow funny. He sneered, "Do you think that money counts? Their sum doesn't even reach a hundred thousand dollars! They are merely interest- five million dollars is the principal, not a penny less."
"No way, you're going too far."
"We just charged you a hundred thousand dollars as interest. Do you think we're going too far?"
Gwenyth halted, and couldn't retort his words back. They weren't the ones that she could offend. Also, if they really haggle over the money, she'd be afraid that the four-year interest is more than a hundred thousand dollars.
"Okay, I'll pay you five million dollars. But, we can only pay you back the three million dollars first, please give us some time to prepare the remaining two million dollars."
Hearing that she has money to pay back, Seis decided not to make things difficult for her. "I'll only make up my mind about it after you pay me back the three million dollars."
"Of course, I will."
"Don't play petty tricks on me." He reached out his finger and flicked on her forehead. "If you dare to run away, I'll find you and break your legs first, then drag you to sell. With your beauty, I suppose you should be worth some money."
"Rest assured, we won't run away," Gwenyth forced herself to be calm. Yet, Ursula was frozen by her words.
Three million dollars for three months? What kind of job did she find that could earn so much?
After giving a few more warnings to them, Seis led his four men behind him and strut away. This was the only time they didn't smash and destroy.
The house was in good condition when they left, even Ursula couldn't believe what had just happened.
Seeing that Gwenyth picked up her shoulder bag to leave, she went up and pulled her back.
"Gwen, are your words true?"
