CHAPTER 30- THE PINKY PROMISE
CHAPTER 30- THE PINKY PROMISE
"What is your name?" Catherine's question rang in the room in her yet to ripe childish voice. Her star
like eyes stared merrily at her two guests; Jack threw the candy wrapper on the bin nearby before
quenching her curiosity, "I am Jack and this is Ryan."
The girl replied, "Nice to meet you, big brothers."
Ryan was a born introvert and didn't like interacting much, even though he was curious about this
young girl who was sending tingles down his heart he chose to stay mum and scan her with his
watchful gaze. While he was silent Jack couldn't hold back himself from talking to this sweet kid; it
didn't take long before he started throwing questions at her.
"How old are you, little one."
Catherine showed him her chubby palm with five fingers. Jack laughed, "You are really a kid..." She
was just a five year old yet had more manners than many adults he knew. The boy couldn't help but
adore her; since he was young he always wanted a baby sister but whenever he asked his parents
about buying him one they used to scold him away. Even though he never had a sister of his own he
still developed a serious sis con within himself; he wondered, if he had a sibling he would have doted
on her more than anything.
He then asked, "What are you doing in this company all alone?" Catherine looked up from her play and
replied, "I am here with daddy."
"Daddy?" Jack was quizzical. Catherine nodded seriously before pointing at a portrait which was
hanging on the wall, "There that's my daddy."
The two boys looked at the picture which featured a majestic looking man in black suits, arrogance
danced between his eyebrows as he posed for the photo like a king. Ryan recognized this man, he was
Mr. Silva- the owner of this company; he had seen him once or twice when his father was having a
video conference with the latter.
"Your dad is Silva?" Ryan finally opened his mouth to speak after a long time. The girl replied with a
happy yes; Jack and Ryan looked at each other. This simple looking girl was actually the heiress of this Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
bug company; he had heard his dad mention that Mr. Silva's wife had passed away few years ago and
he only had one daughter. Who knew... The sole descendant who most probably will be deciding this
gigantic company's future was actually sitting alone in a room, riding rolling chairs.
Jack looked at the girl and fell back on his seat, "So... We are on the same boat!" "Boat? Where is
boat?" Catherine asked, she was still a child and had no knowledge about puns and idioms.
But this was something the lad didn't know, "What?" He asked back. Ryan cut him in and offered to
explain things to the girl, "It means... We all are in the same situation."
The girl nodded mindlessly; looking at her it was clear that she was thinking of something but no one
was capable enough to peak into her wild fantasies.
Before the two could say anything they heard the door being pushed open and entered the same
woman who escorted them here, she greeted, "Miss, Young Master Ryan and Mr. Jack."
"Hello, Miss Lala." Catherine was gleeful seeing her, she enthusiastically asked, "Is dad off work, will
he be accompanying me now?" Miss Lala smiled and replied politely, "No, Catherine. Mr. Silva still has
some important business to tend to. I am here for the boys."
While the glow on the little girl's face washed away Ryan looked at her, "Us?"
Miss Lala replied, "The work is done, Young Master. Your dad is waiting for you outside." Jack, who
was the most enthusiastic to come here was the first to spring off his seat out of elation; he happily
commented, "Finally, I am going home... I won't ever come back here."
Hearing his words Catherine's already sad expressions worsened into that of agony. At the verge of
tears she asked attracting everyone's attention, "Won't you two come back to play with me? Did I make
you both unhappy... Will I be alone again?" Her sadness was genuine; she had no mother or a sibling.
She was yet to go to school and thus her father used to bring her to the company or leave her home
with her nanny. No matter where she was the little girl was left alone to entertain herself, she had been
all alone since she remembered.
The company didn't permit employees bringing their kid to the office which made her more isolated and
lonely; even if someone was coming the innocent little girl would end up getting bullied or fooled out by
the other kid.
This was the first time in past two years that someone actually treated her this good and kept her
company without harassing her. The Little girl liked this two boys a lot and wished for them to stay a
little longer with her but alas, like everyone they too couldn't wait to get out of this place. She could only
get her heart broken at this.
Seeing that the girl was sad Ryan looked at Jack with a piercing faze as if he wanted to penetrate a
hole within him; Jack too started to regret his choice of words that made her sad.
"I... I didn't mean that, Catherine. I was just..." Jack couldn't say another word to satiate her; Miss Lala
too had no idea what to comment upon this situation. All three gazes were stuck on the little girl who
had her head hung out of sadness and disappointment.
The temperature of the room suddenly dropped by a few inches around Ryan who was sitting on his
seat waiting for someone to mend the situation. He was getting impatient; for some reason he couldn't
bear to see her sad; he was getting angrier as seconds passed her not smiling. He shot up from his
seat all of a sudden and threw a warning glance at Jack, he was a good for nothing and hence was
signaled to keep his mouth shut.
The boy slowly walked up to her, kneeling down beside her he you he'd her chin and lifted her face up.
In a tone which was as sweet as her candies he promised, "Don't be sad, Catherine. I will come to play
with you everyday... You won't be alone anymore."
